My heros are people who are brave enough to fight against evil even when it's inconvenient to do so; people who are willing to put themselves at risk to communicate The Truth; people who are brave enough to stand up against overwhelming odds.
The only one of my heros that I'm lucky enough to be friends with is Village Voice cartoonist Ted Rall. I met Ted after I had been harrassed and impersonated for over a year by an illustrator named Danny Hellman and his cronies. Danny at that time was actually respected and was the curator of some big cartoon art show. When he sent out obscene mass-mailers about things like animal rape and signed my name, all the other cartoonists proved themselves cowards and supported him so they could stay in his art show, much as my current comrades in the music field here continue to support a person who has repeatedly threatened me with violence and waved his fist in my face just the other night..
After all, it would be inconvenient for them to say or do anything.

Ted Rall
is a different breed, though, Ted Rall is a brave and ethical man.
Danny Hellman impersonated Ted for about 3 days and after I told him who was doing it, Ted responded by slapping Hellman with a $1.5 million lawsuit. Then Ted took me to dinner and explained my legal rights to me. This is why I laughed at that whining fiddle-player Lourdes when she had her lawyer write me--she was just trying to silence me because I was giving her bad reviews. She hasn't the vaguest idea what it means to be illegally harrassed, but I do. Harrassment destroys lives and Ted Rall saved mine.
Needless to say Hellman has not bothered me since the lawsuit began and his status has diminished significantly. Basically you only find his drawings in publications like Screw or that dreary new version of "Punk;" not in anything worth reading.
Having dealt with corruption in American cartooning, Ted has more recently decided to take on the biggest game of all--the Bush administration! He went to Afghanistan and almost got killed so he could come back and tell you The Truth in two books:
"To Afghanistan and Back," and the new, "Gas War.".
This is the book George W. Bush doesn't want you to read! Ted Rall's new GAS WAR: THE TRUTH BEHIND THE AMERICAN OCCUPATION OF AFGHANISTAN (136 pp., $10.95) is now available. Certain to become one of the most controversial books of the year and the result of painstaking research and analysis, GAS WAR proves that the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan was motivated solely by the Bush Administration's desire to control Caspian Sea oil and gas reserves--specifically, to establish a U.S. puppet regime that would permit the construction of
